A large part of Indian population lives in Rural and semi rural areas, the rural areas have several basic needs like lighting, electricity, Clean drinking water, health care ,Devices for processing agro produce, and Information with entertainment connectivity. Several Innovations and new processes were evolved to address these issues.

 

Innovations are mainly focused on solutions that meet local requirements, are low cost ,are power independent, and locally serviceable with low skills.

This equipment was innovated and designed to produce cooking oil with the oil seeds grown in the rural area. The oil seeds were produced in very small quantity and it was not feasible to have them crushed in a large oil crushing machine, such machines were also located far away from the villages and getting there was a tedious journey. These machines helped the rural population to produce oil in very small quantities and use it for their own uses. The operation of the equipment is by Solar Energy and helps make it completely power independent and installable anywhere.

SOLAR POWERED RICE HULLING MACHINE

 

This equipment was innovated and designed to hull paddy into rice grown in the rural area. Paddy is grown in small quantity and rice required is laboriously hand pounded involving 2-3 women each time for producing just small quantity of Rice. The machine produces rice in short time and in quantities sufficient for a family over a week. The operation of the equipment is powered by Solar Energy and helps make it completely power independent.

A lot of Rice straw, wild banana, and other fibrous products are found in Northeast India. This equipment was Innovated and designed to spin ropes from this yarn. A single person can spin ropes and produce a large quantity of ropes for use in several applications. Each type of rope from the fibres is useful for some typical purpose like packing, binding etc. The operation of the equipment is powered by Solar Energy and helps make it completely power independent.

Many rural areas across India grow Coconuts, Areca nut, and similar crops. Coconut and similar crops after post harvest are stored in an attic like space with ventilation over a long period of time to cater to the market as and when required. The produce stored many a times gets infected with fungal due to large moisture content leading to a lot of loss of produce. The only solution to this was removing moisture by ventilation and the best method was 'forced' removal of moisture. A simple solution was innovated with an integral tile and a solar powered air extractor. The Integrated tile removes air from the top and continuously ventilates the produce resulting in lower loss of crops.

There is shortage / absence of electricity in several rural parts of India. A simple solution was to offer Solar lighting solutions for the issue , the solution has found wide acceptance. Some rural areas and hamlets in India especially in Hilly and difficult areas have very low incidence of sunlight for most parts of the year and solar solutions are not feasible here. To solve this issue an innovation based on human power i.e. 'hand cranking' was designed and evolved. The hand crank lighting unit has a special 3 phase brushless generator, on cranking the equipment electricity is produced and stored in a SMF lead acid battery or in a LiPo battery, this power is used for lighting 2 /4  LED lamp units providing adequate lighting for small hamlets and huts. One hour of cranking produces about two hour of light out put.

Cooking is a major activity in rural areas of India, Firewood and similar bio mass is used for cooking in a very inefficient manner wasting fuel and also producing a lot of smoke and discomfort. A solution was innovated which uses Solar energy to help in forced ventilated cooking and also a small light pack to provide illumination. A solar panel produces electricity and stores it in a SMF lead acid battery or in a LiPo battery, this power is used for powering a fan / blower. The forced air from blower helps in efficient and full combustion of the Bio Mass resulting in efficient, smokeless cooking. A part of the stored energy is also used for lighting two LED lamp units providing adequate lighting for cooking and small tasks.

Availability of Solar energy in most areas of India during monsoons and cloudy days is a challenge. This issue leads to absence / in adequate operation of solar powered lights during cloudy days in rural areas. The phenomena of weather in monsoons facilitates wind availability. A simple integration of Solar and Wind at a very low cost was innovated to combine both these powers and enable them to complement each other during absence of one another and help the load to operate fully. The capacity of these micro integrated units are up to 50 Watts and help power basic lighting and some very small loads.
